Operation Pelican: What a $250k bribery case tells us about procurement integrity

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has released its report as to Operation Pelican, a joint investigation with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) into government procurement bribery.

The investigation found that a Western Sydney Airport staff member had abused his position by soliciting a $250,000 bribe in exchange for improperly steering a tender process. The staff member was convicted in July 2025 and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment to be served through an Intensive Correction Order with 500 hours of community service.

The case underscores the importance of a robust procurement process which involves multiple decision-makers, limiting the influence of any one individual.
